This Concealer Trick Gave Me the Best Brows of My Life
Subtle sculpting, instant lift.
Most of us realize the effects of a pair of nicely defined eyebrows in framing our features only after over-plucking. While I’m letting mine grow out, I’ve been focusing more on accentuating their original shape. Using concealer has been the most helpful in defining and shaping my eyebrows.
This method has been around for a while. It’s when you apply concealer to highlight your eyebrows. This makes it easy to achieve clean-looking brows even without grooming. Because of how effective this method is, it’s commonly referred to as ‘carving out brows’.
Whether you have sparse brows, bushy brows, or thin brows, applying concealer below the brows helps you showcase their natural shape, and bring radiance to the upper part of the face.
So if you need new ways to improve your eye makeup, below is a step-by-step guide to using concealer to define the shape of your eyebrows for a clean, lifted effect.
Before diving in, note that you should finish your makeup, including your eye makeup, before starting so that you can better see the contrast of colors.
How to Use Concealer to Shape Eyebrows
Step 1: Shape Your Brows
Shaping and preparing your eyebrows is essential to achieving a clean look when using concealer. If you want, you can quickly tweeze out a couple of stray hairs that are outside the natural shape of your brows or trim long hairs.
If not, skip to brow products before moving on to the next steps. Use a brow pencil to fill in sparse areas, create a feathery appearance, and achieve full-looking brows. You can try a tinted brow gel to subtly define eyebrows as well.
Step 2: Use the Right Concealer
You can use your regular under-eye concealer to shape your eyebrows. Under-eye concealer is usually 2 shades lighter than your skin tone. That’s why it goes perfectly well to shape and define eyebrows, accentuating and highlighting their shape.
Instead of very runny liquid concealers, use a concealer that’s a bit creamier and thicker and doesn’t move much. This makes the blending much easier because otherwise, the concealer can transfer toward the brows or move down to the eyelid.
Something like a stick concealer or a cream concealer would work better. Concerning the finish of your concealer, it’s all up to you. Note that using a radiant finish concealer will highlight your brows even more.
Step 3: Apply Concealer to Outline Brows
Use a flat-tip brush to apply the concealer to outline the shape of your brows. You can use your fingers if you don’t have a brush. Apply the concealer by drawing a very thin line on the edges of the brows following their natural shape. Apply it all the way to the brow tail.
For more definition, you can apply your concealer above the brows too. Make sure to use very little amount of concealer at this point. The upper eyelid is a small area.
So you only need a tiny amount to properly blend it. Too much concealer below the eyebrows is very difficult to blend and often leads to a patchy look.
Step 4: Blend the Concealer
Blending is the most important part of using concealer for perfectly shaped eyebrows. Whether you’re using a brush, your fingers, or your makeup sponge, you need to blend the concealer using tapping and dabbing motions.
Press the concealer into the skin as close to the brows as possible for precise definition. Avoid smearing the concealer and moving it too much because it can mess up your eyeshadow.
Make sure you clean up the edges and tails of the brows by blending as well. Finally, brush up your brows to clean up any residual concealer. And you’re done!
This is how you can use your concealer to shape your eyebrows. For the image below, I’m using Clinique Even Better All-Over Concealer + Eraser because it has a small sponge applicator tip. So I can apply the concealer and blend it without needing anything else.

I love this technique because I have a lot of discolorations around my eyes. So when I apply a dark color eyeshadow, and I must say that I’m not very good at blending it, all those colors combined with layers of mascara and eyeliner give my eye makeup a dirty appearance. As you can see from the image on the far right, using concealer helps me clean that up and give the eye area a sleeker look.
Remember, filling in your brows with a brow pencil before starting leads to better-looking results. And using small amounts makes it easier to blend the concealer.
