Blush has a magical ability to instantly freshen up the complexion, add dimension, and bring life to the face. But as our skin changes with age, the way products sit on it changes, too.

As an almost 40-something, I’m not sure if my skin counts as mature, and I hope it doesn’t, but I sure do feel the change, and it feels like my once-beloved blushes aren’t doing my skin any favors. The changing skin texture and structure do have an effect on how makeup looks and wears.

There’s a loss in skin elasticity and volume, which affects where I place my blush on my face. My face feels drier, which can make some powder blushes look bad as they can cling to dry patches.

Plus, I have more permanent lines and wrinkles, which means heavily shimmer formulas can settle into those and draw attention to them. And now that I have more dullness that’s not easy to shake off, the color choice needs to complement my skin tone to make it look more youthful and vibrant.

Well, I certainly am not ready to give up on blush just yet. I’m one of those who overly blush just for the fun of it! Among the formulas I frequently indulge in, a select few are foolproof; stuff that I recommend to people around me all the time.

So if you’re on the lookout for a blush to use on mature skin, or skin that doesn’t want to look so mature, below are my favorite blushes I swear by. Whether you’re looking for something sheer or bold, these are super flattering.

Best Blushes for Mature Skin

1. Nars Powder Blush

Nars Powder Blush - Best Blush For Mature Skin

First off, I’m all for liquid and cream blushes for mature skin, but I know that not everyone’s ready to make the switch. So, before diving into my creamy recommendations, I just have to get this out of the way because this is a foolproof powder blush with an extensive shade range to complement any skin tone.

The powder is very, very fine, so even if you have dry skin, the silky powder just glides on the skin and doesn’t flake or separate. The shades include matte and satin finishes with various undertones, but whichever shade you go for, the formula looks super smooth and streak-free on the skin with minimal to no need for touchups later in the day.

I love the shade Orgasm for my fair-medium skin because it’s a nice pink and has neutral undertones that work on any skin tone. The shade Infatuated is gorgeous on darker skin tones. Use a fluffy powder brush to apply.

Finish: Matte/Shimmer
Size: 0.17 oz/4.8 gr
Good to Know: Vegan

2. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush

If you’re open to the idea of radiant finish blushes, I’d try this first! This isn’t like your regular shimmery blushes. It’s a powder formula with a very finely milled highlighter in it that just makes the finish look more glowy and healthy. It’s not very pigmented, so the radiant finish doesn’t get out of control easily. You can simply build the color but still manage to achieve a soft focus result.

This creates that multi-dimensional effect where your cheeks look lively and youthful every time you move your face. By the way, I love Hourglass bronzers and blushes. As an alternative to this, you can try their liquid blush, the Unreal Liquid Blush, which is a very thin, runny formula with a nice soft matte finish.

The shade Luminous Flush is a beautiful peach that is neither too shiny nor too soft. It’s a subtle shade that looks better as you layer it. This is a powder formula, so apply it with a fluffy brush for a subtle finish, or a dense brush for a more defined, pigmented effect.

Finish: Radiant
Size: 0.15 oz/4.25 gr
Good to Know: Cruelty-free

3. Armani Luminous Silk Cheek Tint Blush

Armani Luminous Silk Cheek Tint Blush - Best Blush For Mature Skin

I love, love this because it combines the weightless feel of a liquid blush with the classy finish of a matte blush. It’s insanely pigmented, but not a fast-drying formula, so it allows you the time to blend and tone the color down and spread evenly. It looks incredibly classy and luxurious,

I love pairing this with my other blushes to create different shades with fun and flexible undertones. It doesn’t separate or turn splotchy as you blend it in. The high-impact color stays like that all day without fading! The matte finish is ideal for achieving flushed cheeks without drawing attention to any particular skin imperfection.

My favorite shade is Intense Berry. It’s a matte plum with neutral undertones. I also like Rosy Peach, which works great on my pale winter skin. I apply it with a dense brush to keep the pigments in place to avoid spreading it too much.

Finish: Natural
Size: 0.4 oz/12 ml

4. Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Blush Stick

Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Blush Stick - Best Blush For Mature Skin

Cream is the dream texture that gives mature skin that well-moisturized, radiant, and healthy glow. This formula is convenient in stick form and flattering with its moisturizing base. Right off the bat, you can apply this directly on your cheeks or use your brush to get it from the tip of the stick. Either way, it’s emollient and satisfyingly creamy, so it just adds a very beautiful layer of color on the cheeks.

It’s not highly pigmented, but it is fade-proof and long-lasting. So take your time to layer until you’re satisfied with the intensity. And hey, you don’t even need a brush for this. Even if you use your fingers, the end result is a seamless blended flush with blurred and feathered edges.

The shade Petal is a gorgeous pink. It’s soft, almost nude, and works great for everyday wear while looking put together and sleek. I swipe the stick on my cheeks and blend it with a dense blush brush.

Finish: Natural
Size: 0.21 oz/6 gr
Good to Know: Cruelty-free, vegan

5. Chanel No. 1 De Chanel Lip and Cheek Balm

Chanel No. 1 De Chanel Lip and Cheek Balm - Best Blush For Mature Skin

I fell in love with this cream blush after I came across it in this beautiful shade of Berry. It looks so yummy, I literally wanted to taste it. I dip my ring finger into the pot, and the formula instantly melts with the heat of my finger. Then I dab it onto the high points of my cheeks, and it looks as if I have that natural post-workout flush. It looks very pigmented, but it’s actually not. It’s super soft with a nice glossy finish.

This is a very skincare-focused formula, so it has this nice balm texture that’s moisturizing for the skin, too. It also goes onto the lips for a nice plumping effect. It turns a flat base into a fresh, perky, and bouncy one just like that. If your skin is extra dry, pair this with Chanel Baume Essentiel in transparent for that glass-skin effect.

Chanel Cheek Balm

Berry Boost is my favorite because it’s the perfect shade of berry that complements my skin tone instead of making me look out of breath. I apply it with my fingers to avoid wasting the product. I also like applying it with a damp beauty blender.

Finish: Dewy
Size: 0.23 oz/6.5 gr

So these are my current favorite blushes for mature skin. These are all pretty high-end options, so the prices are up there. But I’ve seen how my skin looks with these, and honestly, there are days that I just don’t want to take any chances and feel the need to look my best. And these have never, ever disappointed!

If you want to do your own homework, below are my recommendations for things to keep in mind to find the right formula. On a side note, if you have a nice-colored lipstick lying around, give it a shot before splurging on a blush. What to Look for in a Blush for Mature Skin

Formula

Blush comes in different forms. Powder blushes are a safe choice for a long-lasting effect. But cream and liquid blushes tend to be super hydrating and moisturizing. They blend into the skin and sit beautifully on dry, textured skin. They’re easy to blend and build for a natural, radiant flush. Powder can still work, especially if you prefer a matte finish. But remember to go for finely milled, silky powders with minimal shimmer. They tend to blend better and provide a more natural flush of color without settling into fine lines.

Finish

While matte blushes work great for all skin types, slightly dewy and satin finish blushes look incredibly flattering on the skin. That being said, I’m not talking about heavily shimmery blushes. While they’re great for highlighting the face, they can draw too much attention to texture and pores. A safe bet is matte finish formulas that work on all skin types.

Shade

Blush shade depends on your skin tone and undertone. For a youthful, natural look, select blush shades that enhance your skin’s natural undertones. In general, peachy or rosy hues tend to look great on any skin tone.

How to Apply Blush on Mature Skin

Placement

Blush placement is very personal and depends largely on your face shape. I like to go against this rule, but there’s no denying that certain blush placements can make you look older. For that reason, I prefer applying blush only on the high points of my face, toward my temples for a lifting effect, and also coloring up the bridge of my nose. I’d recommend avoiding placing blush too low on the cheeks because it can drag the face down and accentuate smile lines. If you’re feeling bold, try the sunburned blush look and apply the color in a ‘W’ shape across the face.

Tools

Synthetic fluffy brushes give your blush a diffused, even finish. Makeup sponges are great for a flawless look, especially if you’re a beginner and can’t blend well, and you usually have a color contrast between blush and your under-eye concealer. For cream and liquid blushes, I prefer applying them with my fingers as the warmth helps with blending.

Blend

Blush can get out of control quickly, especially with pigmented formulas, and you might end up with harsh lines. So start with a small amount and gradually build up the color. This helps make sure you get a nice, natural flush instead of a weird stripe. Blend your first layer evenly before going in for the second layer. If you have trouble blending properly and seamlessly, get a dry beauty blender and go over the edges of the blush to help the formula look seamless.
