What we expect from mascara can differ massively. While some of us love fully defined, long, curly lashes with several coats of mascara, others, such as my little sister, are happy with a single coat of it. I love applying mascara until it’s a bit clumpy. And she just applies it on the tip of her lashes. But the thing is we both use the same mascara! It’s Benefit Bad Gal Bang Volumizing Mascara.
I have recommended this mascara to so many people both in my circle of friends and to my readers here. No matter their eye shape, lash shape, or what kind of benefit they expect from their mascara, I always bring this mascara up. Because it delivers on every front! So I decided to do a full review of it so that I don’t have to justify myself every time.
For full disclosure, my lashes are a bit longer and curlier than the average person’s. Most of the time, I don’t need to use a curler and I only need 2 coats of mascara to define my lashes. But don’t assume that any mascara would look good on my lashes anyway. Because trust me, bad mascara still looks bad even on the most voluminous lashes.

Wand
Badgal Mascara has a skinny, tapered wand. If you’ve never used a mascara with this type of wand before, here’s the gist. These wands are excellent for lengthening the look of your lashes. And the mascara does deliver in that department.
The thin, sleek-looking wand is plastic and it allows you to use it on hard-to-reach areas like inner corners without getting into your eye, which can happen with chunky wands. The short bristles on the wand literally comb and define each lash.
Formula
The formula has vitamin B5 (panthenol), which is nourishing for the lashes. The texture feels very light with a creamy consistency as opposed to clumpy. It’s not very runny so it does dry down fast enough without getting onto your eyelids and smudging all over.
Pigment
The mascara is pitch black. I mean it’s that satisfying black color we all associate with mascara. Additionally, it’s matte as opposed to glossy. And I love that about this mascara because it looks classy and sleek.
Application
Because of the ergonomic, lightweight wand, I can apply the mascara very easily. The thin wand literally glides on my lashes. Even with the first coat, I see definition and length. And the second coat maximizes length. Now, I don’t get why they call this a volumizing mascara because I’d say it’s great at giving the look of length too.
If you apply your mascara the way most people do, like starting from the root and going toward the top, you’ll get great length but might not get much volume and thickness. For a satisfying amount of volume, you need to modify your application technique.
Apply your mascara starting from over the lashes and do an inside sweep. This helps thicken the appearance of your lashes. Additionally, consider doing a mascara cocktailing.
If you layer different mascaras, wear this together with Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara. That one has an hourglass-shaped wand. And that’s amazing for curl and volume. When you apply that one on top of this, you’ll achieve the look of curl, length, and volume!
Longevity
Benefit claims that the mascara volumizes as long as 36 hours. While I’m not interested in verifying that, I can say that it stays put for me between business hours.
The Verdict
Benefit Bad Gal Bang Volumizing Mascara is one of the best mascaras I’ve ever used. It gives incredible volume. I’ll keep recommending it to whoever asks me for advice.
I have only one single coat on one eye in the picture below. The ‘after’ picture is after I applied 2 coats on both lashes. I’m not wearing an eye pencil or eyeliner, so it’s just the mascara. As you can see, the definition is impressive.
Removal
Bad Gal Mascara is not waterproof. But because it’s water-resistant, you can’t just wash it away. To properly remove it from your lashes, you need an eye makeup remover or a cleansing balm/oil to do a double cleanse. I use Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm to dissolve the mascara. And then I wash my face with my gel cleanser. That’s the only way I completely remove it. Otherwise, I’ll have dark shadows under my eyes from smudged mascara.
